This article should not be a list
[edit]Given that there is already a "List of pubs in the United Kingdom", this article here should not be at all listlike, it should be purely text and pictures. That means we would select the best examples in each section to build up the discursive text on that subtopic, and remove the rest (perhaps to the List of pubs...). The article would be renamed Naming of pubs to emphasize the difference from the list article. Or we could go further:
Given that each section in fact focuses almost wholly on English pubs (not even Scottish or Welsh, still less any Commonwealth ones), the remade discursive-text article would in fact benefit from something close to DaveBP71's suggestion in the thread above, i.e. it'd become Naming of pubs in England, and would have a prominent link to List of pubs in the United Kingdom near the top to help dissuade listification. How does that sound to everyone? Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:06, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
- No objections. Seems things have changed. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:04, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
Wisbech
[edit]82 mentions for Wisbech? Seems comparatively quite a lot. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:18, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
- I've chopped a dozen or two and will cheerfully chop lots more. In work now. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:35, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
- Ah yes, The Cheerful Chopper. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:43, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
- Right, I'm taking a break. The article now has some sort of structure; I'll go on removing lists and replacing them with thematic text. One guide is the date many pubs are attested, so we can structure paragraphs on 18th century pubs with animal names, etc.
- There are still *way* too many sources, and quite a few of them are virtually unverifiable, so a secondary goal would be to cut them down and use decent book sources instead. Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:20, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
- Sounds good. Well done for all the improvements so far. Martinevans123 (talk) 13:28, 18 April 2025 (UTC)

Locations and linking
[edit]Should we link (or even mention) counties, or just the city/ town / village (even when there are multiple places with the same name)? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 14:53, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
- We're free to link such names; names of countries are normally left unlinked. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:16, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, but should there be some kind of consistency for counties. All or none? Martinevans123 (talk) 15:32, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
- All, linked at first appearance, if you're troubled by it. It's a minor detail compared to the overall rebuild. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:37, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
- No objections. I'm surprised we need all those counties all linked at first appearance, but I suppose that's standard geographical WP:MoS. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:58, 18 April 2025 (UTC)

Blacksmiths Arms
[edit]We need a picture of a Blacksmiths Arms pub sign showing the left and right arms of a blacksmith; and ideally also a reliable source saying that the pub name puns on the blacksmiths' arm strength. The article is becoming more accurate but also humourless, which isn't quite right for this topic. Chiswick Chap (talk) 06:35, 19 April 2025 (UTC)
